Before You Start
Before opening your shed kit, we recommend taking a few minutes to prepare your workspace and review the assembly instructions supplied with your shed.
Complete These Checks First
Most assembly issues can be avoided simply by taking the time to understand the process before beginning.
How Are Garden Sheds Assembled?
Our garden sheds utilise the FastTrack Assembly System, designed to simplify installation and reduce assembly time. The process typically follows three main stages:
Build the wall panels
Using the supplied sheets and channels, construct each wall panel individually. Most components are marked with part numbers to help identify their correct position.
Join the wall structure
Once all wall panels are assembled, stand them upright and secure them together to create the shed frame. At this stage it is important to ensure the structure remains square.
Install the roof
Once the wall panels are connected, install and secure the roof sections. The roof helps lock the structure together and provides much of the shed's overall rigidity.
Tools Required
The exact tools required may vary slightly depending on the model, however most installations will require:
Essential Tools
- Cordless drill
- Rivet gun (if applicable)
- Tape Measure
- Spirit level
- Adjustable Spanner
Safety & Access
- Safety gloves
- Safety glasses
- Ladder (for larger models)
Always review your assembly manual for model-specific requirements.
Choosing the right base
One of the most important parts of any shed installation is the base. Your shed should always be installed on a:
Recommended Bases
- Concrete Slab
- Treated timber floor
- Engineered timber frame
- Other solid and level surface
Can I Assemble on Grass or Dirt? — No.
Installing directly on grass, soil, or uneven ground can lead to:
- Door alignment issues
- Structural movement
- Water ingress
- Reduced lifespan
A level foundation helps ensure the shed performs as intended for years to come.
Common Assembly Mistakes to Avoid
- Not checking for square
Many problems trace back to a shed that isn't square. Measure the diagonals before securing components — both measurements should be equal.
- Tightening Screws Too Early
Leave screws slightly loose during assembly to allow flexibility when aligning panels and fitting the roof. Fully tighten once correctly positioned.
- Ignoring Panel Orientation
Many panels appear similar but are designed for specific locations. Always double-check the assembly manual before fixing panels into place.
- Building During Poor Weather
Avoid installation during strong winds, heavy rain or storm conditions. Steel panels become difficult to handle and potentially dangerous in poor weather.
Garden Shed Assembly Troubleshooting
Minor alignment adjustments are completely normal during assembly. Work through the checks below before assuming a fault — most issues resolve with a level base and a square structure.
Troubleshooting & Answers
Tap any question to expand. These cover the issues we’re asked about most during garden shed assembly.
My panels don't line up.
If wall panels appear out of alignment:
- Check that your base is level
- Confirm the shed is square
- Loosen fasteners slightly
- Verify panel orientation
Minor alignment adjustments are normal during assembly.
The screw holes don't line up
This is rarely caused by a manufacturing issue. Check:
- Correct panel positioning
- Assembly sequence
- Sheet orientation
When installing sheets, start from one side and work progressively across the panel. Temperature changes can also cause slight expansion or contraction of steel components.
The roof doesn't fit properly.
The roof relies on the walls being correctly aligned. Before proceeding:
- Check diagonal measurements
- Confirm walls are square
- Verify roof sheets are facing the correct direction
If the wall structure is out of square, the roof will not sit correctly.
My shed feels wobbly.
This is normal before assembly is completed. The structure gains strength once:
- Roof panels are installed
- Bracing is secured
- All fasteners are tightened
- The shed is anchored to the base
My doors won't close properly.
Door issues are usually caused by:
- An uneven base
- Frame misalignment
- A structure that is not square
Check all measurements before adjusting hinges. Minor hinge adjustments can often resolve the issue.
